Light, shadow, sand and water play provide the background for science
exploration for three to five year-olds in this 2,800 SF bi-lingual
exhibit inspired by the Emmy award-winning television series,
Peep and the Big, Wide World. ADI worked with the BCM staff,
research team and WGBH advisors to develop exhibit strategies
to increase adult engagement; enhance age-appropriate science
skills; and encourage science exploration outside of the museum.
Opened July 2009.

In the water area, children engage in open-ended and directed water
activities, prompting exploration of the distinct ways in which water
moves, changes, and interacts with other materials including natural
and everyday objects.
The sand area provides a richly-layered environment for children as they
investigate the properties of wet and dry sand.
“Discoverables” hidden beneath the sand, and animal track pathways to habitat
dioramas, deepen visitors' explorations and real-world connections.
Children meet Peep and Chirp, at the perfect hugging height for young visitors.
Prototypes are tested and evaluated on site. This key step in the design
process contributes to the overall effectiveness of the exhibit.
