In FlowWorks, a 5,000 SF outdoor waterplay exhibit at the Children's Museum of Houston, children experience water's energy and maybe get a little wet along the way. FlowWorks engages children in the concepts of water pressure and flow, as they control and change the flow of water, use tools to capture and measure its energy, and observe the impact of water's power.

Opened fall 2008.
Children turn Archimedes screws, pump squirters, and crank a bucket brigade to fill and spill a 275 gallon cauldron feeding streams of water activities.
Downstream, children can...
  • Set up a floodplain and open the dam to release a rush of water.
  • Design and race boats in rivers and rapids. Change the course to change the race.
  • Divert flowing water through the Aqueduct Maze to power gravity-fed water features.
  • Route water under pressure through the Hydro Switchboard to trigger water special effects.
  • Generate and measure wave motions in the Wave Tank.
